Ariel - The Little Mermaid
Ariel [mermaid form] from The Little Mermaid
The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated musical fantasy film. About a young mermaid princess who is curious about humans and life on land, so she trades her voice for legs and a chance to be human.
I've been wanting to make this costume for years! I'm glad I finally got around to it. This was one of my favorite movies growing up. I also made her human form costume earlier this year. Mermaids are magical. This costume consists of: painted spandex tail, painted foam fin, painted foam bikini bra, and a wig. It's a pretty easy costume [when you think about it]. The fin itself is just a big piece of EVA foam mat, and the seashell bra is made from thick craft foam that I painted and hot-glued to a bikini top. The most difficult part of this whole costume was trying to swim in it [that fin isn't very functional].
I know the pictures are a bit dark, but I pretty-much destroyed the fin during the shoot, so there's very little that can be done about it now. There's always the possibility that I'll make repairs to the fin and do another photo-shoot next summer on the beach or by a pool... But for now, this is what I've got.. most of these pictures were taken in an indoor pool at a vacation cabin in the middle of winter. They're all dark because they were taken after sunset [the fountain was on a timer and didn't turn on till 6pm], so all the pictures lacked a bright happy vibe [but I tried my best]. This was also one of the first photo-shoots that I've done with a full audience of non-cosplay people watching [seriously, there were 5-8 people in the room the whole time, none of them fully understood what was happening, and most of them were yelling things at me over the splashing sounds of the water fountain]. It was a very odd photo-shoot.
I also brought it to AnimeExpo2013. some pictures taken on the rooftop pool. I ended up remaking the fin [covering it with fabric because the paint was ruined from the last time I got it wet]. Photos by Edward Tan, Paul Stout, and James Modrall.
