Can-Can Dancer - Moulin Rouge
Can-Can dancer
The Moulin Rouge itself is a cabaret dance hall in Paris, France [built in 1889, it's OLDER than the invention of airplanes]. The movie: Moulin Rouge [2001] is a romantic jukebox musical film directed, produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. It tells the story of a young English poet/writer, who falls in love with the terminally-ill star of the Moulin Rouge.
Yay! Look how colorful I am! This is actually the 3rd can-can dress I've made. The first one I made was in 2004, it was all red and black [and it wasn't very good, I ended up giving it to my high school production of Oklahoma for the dream sequence]. The second one was pink and white, and it looked more like a lolita "Little Bo Peep" dress. Obviously, I designed this dress to my liking and didn't take the color design from any character in the movie. I got complements on it, but everyone couldn't quite guess where it was from. The dress is blue with green stars on the outside, and pink and yellow on the underside.
I love this dress, it's so bright and festive! I also love the movie, it was the very first DVD I ever bought. The skirt is just a plain circle skirt with ruffles sewn in [alternating colors] on the inside, and a blue top layer tacked on top to hide all the stitching. I'm even wearing huge yellow ruffly underwear, but there aren't any pictures of me flashing my bum. And the blue wig was an after thought, I had a black wig all lined up, but at the last second I decided I needed MORE color.
I started working on this in fall of 2011 [finished it in early 2012] and I've been procrastinating photographing this costume for about a year. These pictures were taken around Christmas 2012. It was raining, so all the pictures were taken inside, otherwise I would have had some photos outside with all the lights. I love my makeup. This is the sort of thing I'm talking about when I say "wear tons of makeup". I know it doesn't look like much in these pictures, but in real life I look like I had 2 black eyes and was covered in glitter. Also, those pink sock-things I'm holding in all the pictures are poi. I was spinning them all night, it doesn't look like much in the photos, but the little white pill at the end of the poi were flashing colors [it looked really awesome outside with all the other Christmas lights].
Pictures were taken at the San Jose convention center. This isn't the most appropriate photo location for this costume, but I'll take what I can get. Photography by Oscar Cwajbaum, Kei Tsubasa, Chow Hong Liu, and a few others.
