Faun
Character: Mr. Tumnus or any Faun / Satyr
Greek and Roman history tells us that the faun [or satyr] is a half human - half goat (from the head to the waist being the human half, but with the addition of goat horns) manifestation of forest and animal spirits which would help or hinder humans at whim. Romans believed fauns inspired fear in men traveling in lonely, remote or wild places.
I wanted to make a costume like this ever since I saw the Narnia movie [The Lion, Witch & Wardrobe]. The scene where Lucy first meets Mr. Tumnus was filled with a beautiful innocent curiosity.
There are surprisingly few reference pictures of fauns. The little collection of pictures I have here are what showed up when I googled variations of faun, satyr, painting of faun, faun figurine, faun cartoon, ect.. [There are quite a few satyr creatures from Warcraft games.] Mr. Tumnus is one of the only movie famous fauns. [and quite a few of the faun home-costumes I saw were just plain fuzzy pants with no attempt at a digit-grade foot.] Check out my Hoof Shoe Tutorial for a peek at how I made those shoes [they weren't hard to make, but they are hard to walk in, and impossible to walk on grass with].
I love my big ears [they've got character], and I love these shoes [they're so whimsical]. They've been sitting in my living room reminding me to exercise before the photo-shoot, so every week I try them on and see how long I can walk in them before getting tired [or falling over]. In case you're wondering, they are fairly heavy so you have to walk very deliberately, if you get lazy or tired and start to drag your feet you'll catch the front edge and fall over. [It's a ridiculous work-out to walk on dirt, my calves are still sore]
Costume was completed in summer 2012, because I wanted to wear it to the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, which runs from mid-Sept to mid-Oct [but I might have died wearing these shoes on uneven ground]. So, most of these pictures were taken at a Norcal cosplay gathering in October 2012. And few more pictures in early 2013 in the snow.
Gathering photos by Oscar Cwajbaum, Chow Hong Liu, Rendy Lai, Candace Moore, and others.
Worn to Fanime2014, photos by Paul Stout, and others
