Lock, Shock, Barrel :: Nightmare Before Christmas
I’m not sure what happened, But this is my 4th? Halloween themed dress this year [its only May]. Meaning I started making them in Spring, when there wasn’t any reason to. And I’m already planning my 5th. But I realize that I shouldn’t really wear them until October.
Feels like a Halloweeny type year.
The first was the Bride of Frankenstein. Made by accident, after I made a prototype costume out of canvas fabric that was much too heavy, so I scrapped it.
The second was the Halloween dress with a half a yard of fabric. Made from Halloween clearance fabric that I bought last November and decided to finally use.
The next one was the Halloween colored Dirndl, I made it because I fell in love with the German folksy townspeople costumes from a theater play I was working on, and wanted to make myself one.
And after that, a friend of mine asked if I wanted to do another Nightmare Before Christmas costume, and I said sure…. I already did Sally and a Jack inspired look [Jackie].
Lock, Shock, and Barrel, are the 3 henchmen of the villainous Oogie Boogie. I’m the witch looking one.
The dress is totally made by me, from scratch. Half-circle skirt, long sleeve, some detail on the hem [less than 2 yards of fabric total]. Zipper down the back. Nothing terribly difficult. Took about 1 day to make. It’s the same exact fabric as the apron on the dirndl.
In all honesty, it’s not terribly distinctive, so I probably could have just found a purple dress in a store.
The hat is a cheap Halloween hat, that I sewed a matching fabric ribbon to.
Stockings, shoes, pumpkin bag. The mask is craft foam.
See the Workshop page for a picture of the dress in pieces.
