Western Prairie Dress
In American, The Victorian Era 1837 to 1901, was the time of: Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, The Civil War, Union and Confederacy, California Gold Rush 1849, Civil Rights Act of 1866, Thomas Edison, Susan B Anthony, American Wild West, Post Impressionism.
People in that time tried to maintain an outwardly proper social etiquette and strict gender divides. Top hats, Bell shaped or bustled silhouettes, long modest hems, simple hair [parted in the middle and worn in a bun]. The crinoline was invented in 1850s to hold up the massive dresses women were wearing at the time.
THE WILD WEST ERA or the American Frontier, began after the American Civil War. It lasted from 1865-1895 and women would wear Prairie dresses like this as a everyday work dress.
Simple single dart bodice, long sleeved, long skirt. Zipper down the back.
I made this dress from scratch out of an old couch cover. I added some pink ribbon with lace ribbon overlay for that gunne sax feel. The bodice and sleeves are lined.
I like the Wild West era.
It’s tightly connected with the history of the state where I live.
In 1848, California and other western territories were purchased from Mexico. There were settlements and churches already built here, which is why all the old cities have Spanish names. The oldest surviving building in California is Mission San Juan Capistrano, built in 1782.
Other famous things that happened during the Victorian Era [1837-1901]: Queen Victoria 1819-1901, President Martin Van Buren thru President William McKinley. Abraham Lincoln 1809-1865, Susan B Anthony 1820-1906, Mark Twain 1835-1910, Thomas Edison 1847-1931, The American Civil War 1861-1865. American Wild West. Vincent van Gogh 1853-1890.
If you like historical fashions, also see my : Renaissance lady, Edwardian black, Edwardian walking, Victorian blue, 1800s bathing suit. Poppins style long coat.
