Condom Couture
This year, I volunteered to do some work for an HIV and HepC Fundraising Awareness Benefit. The non-profit asked designers to make contraceptives more fashionable by transforming condoms into art. This is an original design.
This dress was made my me, from scratch. I call it space-fairy style. It was one of the more colorful dresses at the show. If you look closely, all the details on the dress are condoms. I am very proud of the back of this dress, and the collar.
See the Workshop page for more pictures, I used this dress in my self-photography post.
As a culture, Americans have become distracted by current events. Now that our news is trending, our attention span is fleeting. We know very little about long standing issues, because we simply lost interest in them. Young people today know very little about what actually happens with STDs, and people aren’t taught anything biological about it in school. Sexual and Reproductive Health is still somehow a taboo topic, and is not being adequately communicated in any environment. So it’s no wonder that there are generations of people who know nothing about it.
There are some curable STDs, and some that aren’t. There is not currently a cure for HIV AIDS, only treatments. Chlamydia, Syphilis, gonorrhea , are all curable, but could kill a person if left untreated, and can be spread to others. Women’s Reproductive Health Services are critically important for having healthy women and children, but somehow, services that specialize in reproductive health are criticized and de-funded [because it’s a taboo topic]. Condemning something that helps people live better is a new social phenomenon, and it’s furthering an infuriating problem of why Sex Education isn’t more extensive.
While the problem remains unsolved, I think HIV AIDS has been largely forgotten by society.
Pictures were taken at by me and others. My model for the show was only 1 size smaller than me, but she was like 6 inches taller than me. So I was able to do a mini-shoot in my home with the dress. All other photos are from the event. 10/2016
