The Tallest - Invader Zim
Invader Zim was a Nickelodeon cartoon.
This costume is of the Leaders of the Irken invasion forces, known as The Tallest.
The show is over a decade old by now, but it has a loyal following of now-adults.
It has that dark comedy sci-fi feel, with unapologetic nonsensical humor. It’s got that cartoony style of irreverence for human society, pessimistic themes, satirical. By having the show be from an aliens point of view, the audience sees how dysfunctional society is, and how gross and dumb humans are.
Zim is sent to earth by his leaders: The Tallest, to assess earths weaknesses, and prepare for the Irken invasion forces. The show ran for 2 seasons [starting in 2001 – ending with a DVD release 2004]. BUT last year, [2017] there was talk of a movie, so YAY. UPDATE: 2019, I just saw the Movie.
Actually, 2 months after wearing this costume to Fanime, they announced a PHASE TWO revival at comic con. So now it's relevant again.
I was a big fan. In college, I even went to a comic book signing for the creator of the show. Turns out he’s local.
I’ve been meaning to cosplay from this show for over 10 years now.
This is another one of my box-head costumes. The heads are made out of cardboard, covered in felt. Not spectacularly detailed, but it gets the job done. The Irkens have green skin, antennae, and magenta colored eyes. They also all seem to wear backpacks that are fused to their spines. The tallest wear a spacesuit dress with hand gauntlets.
The rest of the outfit is matching shirts and pants, Hand tubes, collars.
you can't see it. but i did make large purple Irken logo on our backs that had each had a SIR robot on them.
Overall the costume was Very cheap costume to make. The cardboard was free, and that felt fabric was only $6.
See the Workshop page. Specifically, Hats/Makeup/Sewing for Things I learned while Making Things, and other similar thoughts about costume construction.
The hardest part was seeing out of it. I forgot to factor in the size of the teeth when making the mouth hole, so my vision was obstructed.
Pictures were taken at Fanime2018 ... Photos by Todd Jackson, Mike Fobeboy, and others.
