My Neighbor Totoro
Character: Totoro
My Neighbor Totoro is a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film follows the two young daughters of a professor and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan.
I love Totoro. I wanted to make a Totoro because it's such a popular character. Parodies, homages, and references to the film have made Totoro a global icon of Japanese animation. [Totoro has been in American shows like Toy Story, South Park, and Drawn Together]
This thing will blow your mind! It's beautiful and absolutely massive. It's a big fiberglass shell (perfectly hollow). I did all the fiber-glassing in the garage and moved it inside to do the fur. It was so big it wouldn't fit through the front door and it barely fit through the sliding glass door. The eyes and mouth are painted metal mesh, so I can see out of it, and the nose is Wonderflex. I'll write up a tutorial of how I did it, but I strongly discourage anyone from using fiberglass for something like this.. Fosshape would have been soooo much easier in the long run. It gets crazy hot in there, so I've been avoiding doing this photoshoot for almost a year.
This thing is now a permanent fixture in my living room. It's too big to fit through a normal doorway, so it just hangs out where the Christmas tree usually goes. [It's a real good conversation piece]
