Making replicas [with a silicone and plastic]
It is not hard to use, but it is a specialty purchase.
You can buy small quantities of mold making supplies at craft stores, but they're mostly for jewelery making, for props you'll always need more.
Today I'm making a skull belt for my comic book Mystique costume.

Step 1.
Get/make a shape that you want to make plastic replicas of and hot-glue it to the bottom of small container. My shape is a lollipop. You can make your own custom shape [out of clay or plastic] or anything you happen to have around the house. I tried many times to make my own skull out of friendly plastic [polymer clay], but had loads of problems sculpting/making it symmetrical. |
Step 2.
Mix up some silicone rubber and coat the shape. Just pour it on until the shape it completely covered. Wait a few hours until it solidifies, and peel it off. You can buy it in small amounts from the local hobby store, in the jewelry making section. Now I have a mold. My rubber has a pink/orange color because of the leftover color dye from the Leeloo suspenders I made. |
Step 3.
Now I have a mold, and I'm ready for casting. Mix up some liquid plastic and pour it into the silicone mold. The liquid plastic is an equal parts mixture, mix it very well so you don't get sticky spots. My liquid plastic is black. Be careful with it, it will stick/stain any clothing, and your nails. You don't have to use liquid plastic. You could use Friendly Plastic polymer clay and press it into the mold. |
