Gandalf The Grey - Lord of The Rings
Gandalf The Grey is a character in J. R. R. Tolkien's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He is a wizard, member of the Istari order, as well as leader of the Fellowship of the Ring and the army of the West.
I made this one for a boyfriend I had a few years back, who was super bitchy about some weight he gained and was about to give on cosplay-ing, because he didn't feel like he looked good enough. There was a lot of other things wrong with him, but I made this for him to be encouraging/supportive of the situation. 'you don't have to look bangin' to cosplay'. He didn't lift a finger during the construction of it, and he never wore it, so when we broke-up I kept it.
It's such a baggy shapeless garment, that it wasn't hard to sew.
The hardest part was the hat. I made this stupid hat from scratch, it's mostly craft foam. It is very back-end heavy. Wearing the beard was a problem too. I had never worn a fake beard before, so it was challenging. This one loops around the ears in an uncomfortable way, but it was also slightly too big, so it kept sliding down, and I didn't have any safety-pins on me to attach it to the hat.
For reasons I can't recall, I decided to wear 7inch heels to try and make myself taller, but I ended up wearing the belt really low to make myself look more masculine, and the other all effect is that I look shorter. go figure. Also, the pipe. I rolled a hookah pen (disposable e-cig) with Worbla into a pipe shape, so I could puff on it for effect.
Overall, I don't think this is my finest work.
Costume consists of: large robe, belt, hat, beard, staff, pipe.
Pictures were taken at a very casual cosplay gathering in San Jose, CA [May2015]. Photos by Toshi, Eric Valverde, and others.
