1800s Bathing Suit
My 1800s bathing suit, historical beach dress. I’ve been really into historical styles these past few years.
See my : Renaissance Lady, Regency Blue, Edwardian Black, Victorian Lady, Steampunk Green, Edwardian walking skirt.
In American, The Victorian Era 1837 to 1901, was the time of: Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, The Civil War, Union and Confederacy, California Gold Rush 1849, Civil Rights Act of 1866, Thomas Edison, Susan B Anthony, American Wild West. THE INVENTION OF THE BATHING SUIT. Ect.
I’ve been into historical fashion for a while now. And I read a few History of Fashion articles on the invention of the Bathing Suit. People used to swim naked, but the first bathing suits in the 1840s primary purpose was to provide modesty. They were made of heavy fabrics, which absorbed water, and were impossible to swim in. Fashions in the Victorian Era were very modest.
To the untrained eye it Looks like a cute little gothic sundress. I made this beach outfit from a dropped-waist boxy 90s style palazzo Capri romper with enormous shoulder pads. Striped top, sailor collar, black pant. It was hideous, but now that I’m thinking about it, the 90s style did come back into fashion recently. So maybe some young people would appreciate it.
I added a little overskirt to raise the waistline, and then turned the pants into bloomers. And then shortened the sleeves.
I had thought that it would be a good Sweeny Todd inspired bathing suit, since in the 2007 movie there was a scene where Misses Lovett was wearing a navy blue Beach dress.
or a good Beetlejuice style dress.
