Pearl - Steven Universe
Pearl is member of the Crystal Gems, and one of the main characters on the show Steven Universe. She is one of the last surviving Gems on Earth after the rebellion against the Gem Homeworld. After the war, Pearl protected the Earth for several millennia alongside her friends, and later teaches Steven how to use his Gem powers.
Pearl is a perfectionist. She's slender with a thin build, ivory skin, a pointed nose and thin lips. She wears an aqua-blue tunic-leotard with a star on the center of her chest and a sash ribbon around her upper waist.
I binged watched ALL available episodes within a month, and became really obsessed with the show. It's damn-near perfect. This show really gets me.
I wanted to make this outfit because I had some left-over fabric from my Squirtle dress, and it seemed like the perfect color. I did modify the style of the outfit to be a dress instead of shorts, because I just don’t have the buns to be wearing bicycle shorts.
I did have to buy these shoes specifically for this costume, since there’s very little room for re-interpretation of it.
Easy costume. Pretty comfortable. Super cute.

The spear is a plastic broom stick, with a cardstock spiral. I actually had some trouble painting it; it was warm out, and the paint dried too quickly and kept cracking. I had to do a dozen touchup coats. Getting the spiral right took some time. See the workshop page for some in process pictures.
The hardest part was the star on the front. I should've used heat bond to stick it on. But instead I carefully/painstakingly stitched it on. Some of the pictures are taken with Theater Jamie, Lapis, Centi, and Garnet. Pictures were taken at FanimeCon. Photos by Toshi, and others. |
