Rarity - My Little Pony
Rarity works as both a fashion designer and as a seamstress at her own shop in Ponyville. She's a unicorn, and a ladylike fashionista with a Mid-Atlantic accent. Her mannerisms are similar to those of Scarlett O'Hara [from Gone With the Wind]. Her vocabulary is formal, and she is more sophisticated than her friends.
I wanted to make this because one of my friends is really into MLP. So we sat down and watched a few episodes. Rarity is vain and melodramatic.
I made the dress from scratch. It's a simple cutsie dress, all white with purple straps and some blue accent colors. The wig was the hardest part. I tried to curl it, but it just became frizzy. So I braided it into an Up-Do. I made the headband out of thick craft foam and stuck some gems to it. There were surprisingly few Pony costumes at the con. But several people complimented me on how ‘darling’ my outfit was. I felt ‘Darling’.
I think the little shiny stick-on gem accessories added a lot to the costume. The dress itself was sortof plain, I had to jazz it up with some sparkles. I actually made the dress over 2 years ago with the left over fabric from my Togepi Pokemon dress. But I didn’t have a reason to finish the accessories until recently.
I find that those plastic mardi gras bead necklaces are a valuable outfit enhancer. I have dozens of them laying around, and they really glam-up a plain outfit. They also come in every color, so it’s easy to match. I glued some onto my headband, and have some on as a bracelet.
Costume consists of: dress, wig, headband, socks, glitter gems.
Pictures were taken at Fanime2016. Photos by Toshi, EricV, Corpus, CharleeChay, and others.
