Renaissance Fantasy
This dress is sorta in a Medieval-Renaissance style, but not really, therefore it’s a Fantasy dress. The Renaissance era in Europe was the 14th to 17th century. It's the cultural movement that came after the Medieval era, and the plague. Known for its highly realistic linear art styles, and new humanism philosophical attitudes.
The fashion differences between Medieval and Renaissance.
These are Medieval [5th-15th century]: King Arthur, Braveheart, A Knight's Tale, Robin Hood, The Princess Bride, Merlin. Charlemagne, Leif Ericson, William the Conqueror, Richard the Lionheart, Joan of Arc, Vlad the Impaler.
AND These other ones are Renaissance [14th-17th century]: TheTutors, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Shakespeare in Love, Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, Queen Elizabeth The Virgin Queen, Sir Isaac Newton, Michelangelo, Galileo, Brunelleschi, King Charles, Machiavelli.

I actually cut up a 90s prom dress to make this. It originally was a plain halter dress, but then I split it up the front and added the orange fabric, then moved the straps, and added trim, and little sleeves. I made a headband, and now it’s a fantasy dress.
Amazon.com sells a dress that’s similar to this one, but in a simpler color scheme. See picture.> I made this dress because I liked the purple color, and didn’t want the fabric to go to waste. Even though the original dress was too small for me, I knew I could make something pretty from the fabric. The orange color was a random choice, it could’ve easily been black and been more of a gothic-halloween style. Purple/Black instead of Purple/Orange. Or I could’ve cut it in half and just kept the skirt part, and constructed a new top for it. But I'm happy with how it turned out. I have a soft spot for Renaissance style clothing since it was very first style of costume that I ever made. Before the commercialization of cosplay, there was only the local Renaissance faire [but to be fair, there are a few historically accurate society events still going on, mostly themed dances, SCA style, but the Renaissance faire is the most fantasyful]. I’ve made a few other casual fantasy dresses. See my Autumn Fairy, and Blue Fairy. Pictures were taken at a costume Field Day Event. Photos by BlizzardTerrak, Colm, and others. |
