Sally - The Nightmare Before Christmas
Character: Sally
From: The Nightmare Before Christmas [1993], re-released in 3-D [2006]
Sally is a rag doll-woman creation of the mad scientist Dr.Finklestein and the growing love interest of Skeleton Jack. Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, is bored with doing the same thing every year for Halloween. One day he stumbles into Christmas Town, and is taken with the idea of Christmas... But the residence of Halloween town can't get it quite right.
I literally made this costume in 1 day. I bought the red wig for Mystique and Yoko [the costumes were completed months ago, but I didn't have an appropriate wig, so I never photographed them]. Until my birthday rolled around [2012], and I received some present inquiries/money. So I bought the wig and started thinking of other characters who had long straight red hair. Sally came to mind, and I had a pile of old t-shirts in the garage that I've been slowly using as rags.. and that's all she wrote. This dress is made entirely out of old t-shirts, and sharpie. I'm proud of it.
I wanted to do this costume to capture the mood of Halloween, all dark and mysterious. My new years resolution this year is to take more appropriate pictures [not just the living room/backyard pictures I've grown so accustomed to]. This of course means I'll have to start planning and scout locations for shoots.... I accept the challenge.

I know the neckline isn't quite right, but since it's all stretchy fabric, the neck hole kept stretching wider and slipping down my shoulders. So, I added an extra bit on the neckline, and put elastic in there to keep it tight... & I'm now aware that my face scar is on the wrong side... It looked correct in the mirror... c'est la vie. The real fun was doing the makeup. I found a picture of a girl who did stitches makeup, and wanted to try it myself. So, I painted myself pale with creme makeup and doodled the stitches on with liquid eye liner.
We started taking pictures at Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose, CA, I wanted to take some with the mausoleums in the background, but the sheriff came around and kicked us out for being weird. So we found other spots. >>When we were all done, and I took off the wig and dress, I looked just like a weird pin up version of those Monster High dolls. A sexy pale zombie pin up girl.. >> Photography by James Modrall |
