Edwardian Mourning Dress
my Black on Black Edwardian dress. made completely from scratch.
So one afternoon in October of 2020, I decided to make a mourning dress. I think it must’ve been a bad mood I fell into when the weather turned cold, and the year had not yet improved.
I tried to write a poem about all the truly horrible things that had happened this year. But, the poem itself was bad.
So it felt like a black dress season.
I luckily had exactly the correct amount of fabric to do it, and only had to buy some trim.
The lace fabric overlay has a scalloped hem on the skirt at about knee length, the bodice lapel lace is edged with a scalloped lacey trim.
The belt is a dark purple color, I eye-balled the shape of it from scratch. I included some small dark purple trims on the bodice to match.
There’s also a few different types of lace trims on the bodice, but it’s hardly visible, as they are all black. I might end up making a guimpe undershirt.. donno yet.
This outfit sort of reminds me of a scene in Titanic. Rose’s mother wears a black dress when she’s lacing Rose into a corset. AND THEN, i spent an unusual amount of money on a hat. a red hat, a Edwardian hat. and i had to make this combo work..
If you’re having trouble with the historical fashion timeline.
In America, The Victorian Era 1837 to 1901, was the time of: Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, The Civil War, California Gold Rush 1849, Civil Rights Act of 1866, American Wild West. Ect. Top hats, bell shaped or bustled silhouettes, long modest hems, simple hair [parted in the middle and worn up in a bun].
AND After That was The Edwardian Era, 1901 to 1910, the reign of King Edward VII; with the fashion period firmly ending at WW1. Edwardian era was all about the S-curve silhouette, slimmer dresses, pigeon chest blouses, large decorative hats. USA had President Theodore Roosevelt, and President Howard Taft.
It looked like the first season of Downton Abbey. Also Mary Poppins, My Fair Lady, and the Titanic sunk in 1912.
The Belle Époque bridged the Victorian era and the Edwardian era as a golden cultural era of art and peace in Europe 1870-1914 [in USA we call it the Gilded Age].
& Then after WW1, was the start of the 1920s style.

I own another Black Edwardian dress in a very similar style, but that one is truly 110 years old. Whereas this one, I made over a weekend.
