Historical Red Dress 1890s
The red theatrical 1890-1900s dress.
The late-late Victorian Era, practically Edwardian. Mid - Belle Époque. I got it from a local costume shop that was going out of business. I didn’t make this. It’s a theatrical take on a historical style dress.
It’s a very Hello, Dolly! style of dress [1890]. Also similar to something you might see in the movie/play The Importance of Being Earnest [also set in the 1890s].
The construction and the fabrics are modern choices, and very sturdy. Large lapels on a short jacket, puffy sleeve caps, cuffs. The pink blouse is sewn to the skirt, and has a lacy front and high collar, with a lacy bow. I also bought a hat at the same time, but it is more in the Edwardian style, I bought it because it color matched the dress.
I think the outfit was worth the money. It has a lot of nice details on it.

I do a lot of historical costuming these days, but this dress puzzled me for a minute, because the owner of the shop had it labelled as Victorian without any year noted. In the Victorian Era 1837 to 1901, and for the most part, women’s dresses were more of a bell shaped silhouette. But the era lasted a long time, and the styles were always changing. And then after that, in the Edwardian Era, 1901 to approximately 1910, dresses had more of an S-curve silhouette, slimmer skirts, with pigeon chest blouses, and large decorative hats. The Belle Époque bridged them both as a golden cultural era of art and peace in Europe 1870-1914. Reconstruction Era.
The 1890's was also known as the "Mauve Decade", the "Gay Nineties", and "The Gilded Age". SO this style of dress is perfectly 1890s, tying together the Victorian and Edwardian fashion styles. The voluminous Gibson girl hair style started being popular in 1890s. This historical picture of a Burgundy dress 1894-1895, is a very similar style of dress to mine. |
