Bustle Black Dress (victorian)
I love this dress. Every inch.
I made it from scratch. I started with the fabric, which I had for many years, waiting for the prefect occasion. It’s not perfectly historical, but its closely based on the 1870s-1880s fashions.
In the Victorian Era 1837 to 1901, women’s dresses went thru many shape variations. Some decades dresses were more of a bell shaped silhouette other decades they were bustled. The bustle era in Victorian times is the 1870s-1880s.
I jazzed up the dress with some red accessories. I love that circus umbrella.
During the Victorian Era in America 1837 to 1901, a lot of stuff happened: Abraham Lincoln 1809-1865. Mark Twain 1835-1910. The Civil War 1861-1865. Union and Confederacy. California Gold Rush 1849. Colorado Gold Rush 1859 . Civil Rights Act of 1866. Thomas Edison 1847-1931. Susan B Anthony 1820-1906. American Wild West. The 15th Amendment 1870, and 1 year later, the NRA. Mormons settle at Salt Lake City 1847. The US purchases Alaska from Russia 1867. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company 1870.
In the Wild West: prostitution, gambling, promiscuity, and alcohol; but people of the time tried to maintain an outwardly proper social etiquette and strict gender divides. Top hats, and hoop skirts.
Other things happened too. the World's Fair was created 1851. Herman Melville's Moby Dick published 1851. The invention of the motorized sewing machine 1830. Telegraph machines 1843. Baseball was invented 1846. Charlies Dickens’ book A Christmas Carol 1843. Vincent van Gogh lived 1853-1890.
Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang engage in the first successful train robbery 1876.
The Woman's Christian Temperance Union 1874. The Molly Maguires [an Irish/American terrorist society] 1835-1880.
You might have noticed there are several books, movies, shows, and stories based in the Victorian era, this is because of Linotype printing machine, invented in 1883, allowed for much faster printing of many more papers/books. Gutenberg invented the first printing press to mass produce the Bible in the 1400s, so by the 1800s technology had improved, and books were common.
If you like historical dresses, check out my : Dickens faire outfit, Black Edwardian, Edwardian walking, Steampunk Green, Renaissance Lady, Regency Blue, Colonial Cupcake, purple eliza. Red 1890s. Or possibly one of my fantasy dresses: Purple fairy, Autumn fairy, Blue Fairy.
